On Bases
Base design is the most fundamental part of Clash of Clans. There are an infinite amount of possible base designs, but every base can be roughly placed in one of two categories.
Farming Bases - Characterized by an exposed Town Hall outside of walls with highly protected storages. Useful for players who do not care much about trophies. Effective farming bases can be found for players as new as town hall 6. These types of bases are recommended for most players.
Trophy Bases - Characterized by a centralized, well protected town hall. Often, trophy bases have relatively poorly protected resources. Effective trophy bases can be found at Town Hall 7. However, because trophy bases sacrifice resource protection, they are not generally recommended.
In the end, which base type you choose is based on personal preference. Most experienced Clash of Clans players will, however, recommend players not pushing (below 1800 trophies or so) to use a farming base.
additional, more knitty-gritty base classification can be found at the bottom of this page

Designing your own base
If you are between town hall 6 and 8, it is not recommended to design your own base. It is much easier to find an efficient base online. If you do choose to design your own base, however, here are some tips to keep in mind:
- keep storages separated by walls, and preferably far away from each other
- if possible, centralize the clan castle
- air defenses, wizard towers, and mortars should be well protected
- keep mines, barracks, army camps etc. outside of the base
- try to keep no more than 3-4 buildings in a wall compartment
- layering walls is useless, wallbreakers can break through 2 layers at once

RECOMMENDED Bases
Feel free to search for your own bases, but I have compiled screenshots of efficient base designs for all relevant town hall levels. All bases have been classified as either farming or trophy pushing.
Town Hall 7:
Farming
Town Hall 7:
Farming
Trophy Pushing
Town Hall 8:
Farming
*note this base can be easily converted into a trophy base, just replace the separating wall and a storage in the mid compartment with the town hall
Trophy Pushing
*similar to the farming base, just with small midifications
Ringus Bases - Ringus bases, used almost exclusively by in Town Hall 9, can be either farming or trophy pushing, and are very distinct if you know how to look for them. They are characterized by:
an inner compartment containing Xbows, air defenses, the Clan Castle, and sometimes mortars, hidden teslas, dark elixer storages, or the Town Hall.
a middle ring composed of non-defense buildings, often storages, hero altars or mines.
an outer ring composed of any defences no in the inner compartment
Ringus bases are designed to counter defense-targeting unit (DtU) spam (giants, balloons, and [mostly] hogs). They are designed so that the DtU run around the base destroying defences in the outer ring, isolated from the inner compartment by a layer of non-defences. All the while, the inner defences pound on the distracted DtU. Ringus bases are much weaker against non DtU based army compositions, especially if the attack is targeted on one side (due to the spread out nature of the defences). Ringus bases are only recommended if a sizable amount of your attackers use hog riders. Ringus bases are, however, highly recommended as war bases, provided the defender has reached Town Hall 9.
